Overview of Outreach Project

Maplewood, NJ -- The Children's Emergency Medical Fund of New Jersey of New Jersey has long recognized the need for community outreach programs. Navigating public agencies is a nightmare. Finding appropriate programs for chronically and critically ill children can be difficult and time-consuming. Bringing services to children and their families is frustrating, impeded by numerous bureaucratic obstacles, and is often insurmountable. The key to solving this problem is to link agencies, develop a referral network and get the word out to the public through educational institutions, the web, the media, the religious community and social and fraternal organizations.

In order to serve our families and the community at large we have teamed with the New Jersey Pediatric Society/Quality Physician's Network to disseminate information. Through this partnership we sponsor Continuing Medical Education Symposiums, interact and develop relationships with medical facilities and their respective pediatric departments throughout the state, forward information to individual practitioners, school districts, and social service agencies.

Knowing that "knowledge is power," we have created a unique partnership which treats, advocates, and educates on behalf of children. Our newsletters, "Common Cents", alternating with "The Working Pediatrician," bring our readers news on important meetings and lectures, the latest in pharmacological modalities, cutting edge technology, legislative issues, advocacy organization listings and general information on CEMF. The network has come together as a unified force in the state working to improve healthcare delivery to our children.

Our other web page: http://www.qpna.org and this one offer immediate access to online CME credits, sponsoring organizations, foundations, communication links, medical research, national and community based groups, and video teleconferencing.

The NJPS/CEMF Community Outreach Programs, including video and computer based presentations, have received national recognition. In 2004 the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation awarded CEMF a $10,000 grant to produce the first interactive CD-ROM illustrating our services and listing numerous agencies and service organizations throughout New Jersey. This enables the viewer to easily access information at the touch of a button (see enclosed CD). The first CD-ROM was mailed and delivered in late 2004 and early 2005 to hundreds of pediatricians, social service agencies, and hospitals in New Jersey and New York. Each recipient has our permission to reproduce and distribute to families in need of assistance. We have begun production of the second CD-ROM with projected completion by fall 2005. The new CD-ROM will by updated and have additional service listings. The film portion will focus on a broad array of children with disabilities, the everyday issues they must face and how their families can get assistance.
